ABOUT THE COMPANY

Bill McGrath opened his eponymous Maserati business in 1977 in a farm barn in Redbourn, Herts to service Maserati road cars. At first the work was mostly engine rebuilds, routine maintenance and Bill’s speciality, tending to the Lucas fuel injection. However, it was not long before the company began carrying out restoration work.

The most significant early restoration was of a 1957 Maserati A6G 2000 Frua Spyder belonging to John Duggleby. This beautiful car put the small company on the map and other similar work followed. In 1985, the company finally outgrew its cottage industry roots and moved to an Industrial Estate in the small Hertfordshire village of Kimpton. As demand for his services grew, Bill took on other mechanics and while the restorations kept the company at the forefront of the Maserati community (including a spectacular Ghibli restored for the Sultan of Brunei), regular servicing on newer Maseratis now became an important part of the business.

With the advent of the Biturbo range of cars, first imported into the UK in 1986, Bill McGrath Maserati became an official Maserati dealer and opened its parts department for business at the same time.

During this period, Andy Heywood joined the business and from the early 1990s took on the day to day running of the growing company. Throughout the 1990s Bill McGrath Maserati continued to offer a mix of servicing, restoration and parts supply for cars of all ages. Again, the high profile restorations (this time of a 3500 Vignale Spyder for the King of Morocco and an A6G Frua Coupe for Andrew Green) punctuated the daily business.
When Ferrari took over Maserati in the UK, Bill McGrath Maserati decided to remain with its core business of servicing rather than extend into sales of new cars. It was therefore nominated as an officially recognised independent Maserati specialist by the new importers, the first company to be named thus in the UK, and this is how it remains today.

In 2004, Bill McGrath retired completely from the business, which then became Bill McGrath Limited, naturally with Andy Heywood as managing director and owner. Over the next few years, the company would raise its commitment to the Maserati marque by increasing the size of its workshops and its parts stock.

In 2009, the company acquired the diagnostic equipment necessary to service the modern 3200 and 4200 era of Maserati and moved on to looking after the next generation of cars.

Sadly, Bill McGrath died in December 2009. It was truly the end of an era, but the company that still bears his name retains his original ethos of producing high quality work and providing good old fashioned customer service.

Today the company still works from the small industrial estate in Kimpton, but with a site of 15,000 square feet. It is a very different company today to the one Bill McGrath founded, dealing in the servicing, repairs and restoration of Classic, Biturbo and modern eras of Maserati cars, as well as supplying parts to a worldwide audience.
